unless im missing something l88 vettes didnt have a filter. they did use a foam "sealing ring" to seal to the cold air ghood. Is that what is missing? There should be a little top hat with a metal screen in place around the top of carb opening too.

Yea, that's what I'm referring to. The screen with the foam element that goes into the hood. (Air filter AC Delco pn#-6423906)
Mr Nelson just stuck a K&N filter in place of that, which is cool..

Dave thats a GREAT question. The pictures that have been posted only show the metal screen and foam seal on the carb base. GM also put a metal screen inside the hood with a foam element called an air filter "by AC delco" . If its a safety issue "fire" then all A12 cars, Hemi cars, Fords with Ram air and Torinos with Shacker scoops should also be included in this safety factor. Maybe all Firebirds and any car that came with some type of Ram air assembly that involves an air filter in or sealed to a fiberglass chamber or hood must also be allowed to run without a filter?
