I recall reading about when they filmed that movie and the older guy riding SHOTGUN was not too keen about being in the car, he had to take some "medicine" to calm him down.
I also remember reading that the Mustang needed all kinds of aftermarket parts to try and keep up with the Charger, but the Chargers engine was STOCK.
There is one chase scene where they are coming out of a corkscrew ramp onto a straight away and you hear the Charger stomp on the gas and the Mustang can not keep up as you see the Charger pull away.

I thought all the aftermarket stuff had to do with the Mustangs suspension.
And Steve Mcqueen was doing the driving too

I would not expect a 390 to keep up to a 440 .A 427 or 428 CJ would have done the job no problem.
